Our Story
Born from a $6,200 Vet Bill
Pet Insurance Insider was founded after our editor's dog, a five-year-old Golden Retriever named Biscuit, tore his ACL chasing a squirrel. The surgery cost $6,200. They didn't have insurance.
After that experience, we spent months researching every major pet insurance provider — reading the fine print, filing test claims, and talking to thousands of pet owners about their experiences. What we found was a market full of confusing jargon, hidden exclusions, and marketing that obscured more than it revealed.
So we built the resource we wished had existed: an independent, plain-language guide to pet insurance that puts pet owners first.

Vet cost estimates are compiled from published veterinary cost surveys, claims data from insurance providers, and direct consultation with our veterinary advisor. Ranges reflect geographic variation across the US.
